Jacksmith: the blacksmith game where a sloppy pour loses the battle
Jacksmith came out of Flipline Studios in 2012, the same studio behind the Papa's restaurant games, and it takes their order-and-craft loop somewhere new. Jacksmith is a donkey blacksmith with a shop built into a wagon, helped by his apprentice Scout. Soldiers come to the counter and each files an order for a sword, a bow, a shield, an axe, a mace or a pike. You build every one of those by hand at one of four craft stations: pick a design and a metal, pour the molten metal into the mould, then finish the weapon in the stages its type needs, such as hammering for swords and pikes, construction for axes, maces and shields, or the string and arrows for bows. Each stage gets its own score.
Then the soldiers march down the trail with whatever you forged. You do not steer them, but you are not idle: the wagon carries a cannon, and over the campaign you unlock fire, ice, lightning, repair and booster cannonballs for it. Fallen enemies drop ore, weapon parts and gems, and you click them to collect them; that ore is what you forge with next. The port on jacksmith.lol is the HTML5 conversion of the original Flash game, so it runs in the page with no plug-in; it draws on WebGL, which every current browser has, and a mouse or trackpad is the comfortable way to play.

Getting five-star weapons and richer battles
- Match the element to the enemy, not just the warrior: Enemies come in eight elements, and the Beasts book on the counter shows what each one is weak to. Element Boosts, unlocked by filling a mould's Star Meter, let you forge to that weakness.
- Get the pour right first: The pour is the one stage every weapon type goes through, so it is the score that counts most often. Spilled metal is counted as excess, and running out of metal partway is its own failure.
- Use the cannon and the loot: Keep collecting drops while the soldiers fight, and use the cannon: the Ice Bomb freezes an enemy so it cannot attack, and the Repair Bomb fixes your soldiers' worn weapons.

Pro tip: Weapons have Durability as well as Power, and they wear down as the soldiers fight. When a fight drags on and weapons start to give out, a Repair Bomb from the cannon keeps the soldiers going, so unlock it early and keep it ready.
